The “101” on Organic Lawn Care in Denver

Safe, environmentally sustainable, lush green lawns. That’s what we do and we’re going to show you how to do it yourself!

We have been doing this for over 7 years now and to more than 1000 lawns in the Denver and Belcaro neighborhoods. With a 4.8 star google rating, we know this works!

This is how you spread the mindset!

Real quick, I want this to be short. Organic to us means the way mother earth was intended to be worked. The idea is to enhance what mother earth already does and to steward the land your borrowing.

Organic lawns will get weeds. The goal is to have less weeds over time while having a lush, soft lawn you can walk on and kids and pets can play on safely. Bees, butterflies, worms, and other creatures should not have to suffer for our artistic pleasure. We also don’t want dog waste to kill spots in our lawns… That’s right! A healthy lawn will not die in spots dogs go number 1 or 2 on.

This is the sauce!

Numero uno (Hope I spelt that right, don’t cancel me.)

You have to make sure your current lawn is healthy or you’ll have to spend A LOT of money. We don’t want that so follow along.

You need to be sure your grass will have strength to root well so make sure you have proper water, the right grass type for you micro climate (sun, shade, trafficked, etc), and a maintenance routine such as mowing weekly.

All these step can only help your lawn grow beautifully. If you over do these steps besides overseeding, it will only benefit you more. It just might take a little extra time. Do a scalp, dethatch, scarify, overseed, and compost in one day and BAM! Your already ahead of 90% of all lawns out there.

Correcting Your Soil

Organic is simple.

Literally, just add compost to your lawn twice a year at roughly 1/4th inch depth. The rent compost rollers at some homedepos if you don’t want to fork out a couple hundred to buy one. But over the year you’ll wish you had one.

That’s it!

Adding a good compost will correct the ph issue (in scientific terms it is actually just helping the bioavailability of beneficial molecules through a wider ph range). Sorry… I go there sometimes.

Just know that doing this every year will reduce fertilizer cost (to zero), Reduce your watering (I’ve seen lush lawns go 2 weeks in summer without a watering), and will allow ammonia to be washed deep into the soil so its dilutes and actually fertilizes the lawn.

Weeding Is Optional

Speeds up the process.

You can hand pull large weeds from the lawn. Remember to get the root. The weeds will naturally go away if you follow the “6 things to boost your lawn” I linked to above. Weeds will not be able to compete with the lawn. Also, the weeds you will have will be dainty things that blend right in after a mow.

Best Lawn Practices for Denver

Details: The top one inch of soil should get fairly dry before waterings and you should water enough so that it can sink deep into the soil but not runoff onto hardscapes.

Deeper dive (more detailed): Watering usually 2-3 days a week produce the nicest lawns in Denver but it depends mostly on sun exposure whether too water less than that.

A great practice is to set your watering times to go off twice a day on days you water. This will allow the water to soak into the ground better with less runoff.

If you have good, even coverage from your irrigation system, standard fan sprayers usually run between 7-12 minutes for a once a day watering or 2 times at 3-5 minutes each time. If you have upgraded Roto nozzles (not rotary heads, different beast) you can run them continuously for roughly 18-30 min. Once you see run off, you should stop watering.

“The 6 annual steps”, to get one of the best lawns in Denver

Step 1: “Water”

Simply put, water enough but not too much.

Step 2: “Aeration”

Simply put, aerate once a year to promote root growth and improve soil health.

Details: Aerating involves getting air and water (which carries oxygen) into the soil and encouraging healthier root growth.

Deeper Dive (more detailed): In Denver’s clay-heavy soils, compacted soil can suffocate grass roots and lead to poor growth. Aerate once a year, typically in early fall or spring, when the grass is actively growing. Granular is a better alternative for core aeration but using both methods ensures the best of both worlds.

Step 3: “Soil Amendment”

Simply put, add organic matter (compost) to enhance soil structure and nutrients.

Details: Apply a top dressing of organic compost to restore lost nutrients and improve soil structure.

Deeper Dive (more detailed): Denver soils often lack sufficient organic matter, especially in newer subdivisions. Compost will enrich the soil, providing slow-release nutrients and improving moisture retention.

Spread 1/4 to 1/2 inch of compost across the lawn immediately after aeration, allowing it to settle into the holes.

Think of compost as natures all organic fertilizer and soil structural enhancer. Applying compost 1-2 times a year will, overtime, reduce water needs, reduce or eliminate fertilizer needs, raise disease resistance and make a drought tolerant lawn.

Step 4: “Seeding”

Simply put, overseed to thicken your lawn and fill in bare patches.

Details: Adding grass seed (mixed grass seed for beginners, tall fescue for drought tolerant Denver grass) will naturally thicken your lawn and is needed for many grass types.

Deeper Dive (more detailed): In Denver’s dry climate, cool-season grasses like Kentucky Bluegrass and Colorado hybrid Tall Fescue perform best.

Early fall or early spring is ideal for overseeding since the soil is still warm, and the cooler air promotes faster seed germination.

Choose high-quality seed varieties suited to Denver’s climate. Usually this means dropping your big box stores for grass specialty stores like Green Valley Turf. The seed will be roughly 3x the price but do you want cheap seed or quality seed that will last.

Spread 2-3 pounds of seed per 1,000 square feet for bare patches (we go slightly heavier), or 1-2 pounds for general overseeding.

Water frequently (twice daily) for two weeks, or until seedlings are well-established. Make sure seed does not wash away from heavy rain or irrigation. To prevent this, adding compost over the top of the new seed helps lock it in place.

Overseeding annually ensures a thick, healthy lawn that can withstand bare patching and foot traffic.

Step 5: Dethatching

Simply remove excess thatch to improve air circulation and nutrient absorption.

Details: Using either a manual or motorized dethatcher to cut the dead and overgrowth out of the lawn to promote good air flow, water, and nutrient uptake.

Deeper Dive (more detailed): Most companies (98%) dethatch incorrectly so its important to do it yourself or higher specialized companies to perform the work.

Think of thatch as the strangling layer of root growth in the top 1 inch of soil. Ripping it up actually makes the grass perform better by allowing better absorption and forcing the grass to put out more roots and less leaf. This makes it substantially more resilient.

After dethatching, collect the debris and discard in your compost or trash bin.

Step 6: “Mowing”

Simply put, mow at the right height and frequency for a healthy, even lawn.

Details: The longer the better. Aim for no less than 3” cut height and at least once a week mowing. Should be roughly between April 15th through October 25th.

Deeper Dive (more detailed): Mowing frequency is the most under rated maintenance for a lawn. Mowing is a workout for your lawn.

If you mow frequently but don’t cut a lot of grass height off each time, the lawn will grow to peak performance. If you cut too much off the grass blade off (more than a 3rd of its total height) the grass will take longer to recuperate and therefore not be as vigorous.

You want to mow with a light weight mower to not compact the soil. You’ll also want it to be strong enough to get a good even cut on one pass. Most battery mowers are not there so we would recommend a honda 21” residential.

You should cut your grass with sharp blades. If you have little white lines on the top of your grass blades, this will tell you your blades are dull and need sharpening. Dull blades lead to stress and diseases.

Switch up the lines you mow on to reduce the chances or rutting. Waiting till your soil is drier will also help with this.

Bagging clippings keeps your lawn looking sharp but also removes recyclable nutrients from your lawn. Weigh the pros and cons.

Overview

Lawn maintenance is a profession when done right just like most things. Follow these steps and your lawn will be lush and rich green for the entire growing season. Heres the order you should follow and can be done in one day.

Mow short (2inches), dethatch, overseed, compost, water, wait 2 weeks with consistent watering. After that your good to go.

Hello people of Denver. Hope you had your coffee this morning. This is a truly in-depth article from A through Z. I'm Zack with Ace of Spades Gardening & Design. I'm the manager at AOS and wanted to give you insight to strategies to help your lawn and garden look the best, starting with spring.

Spring time holds the most work, next to fall, for lawn and garden task. Thats why getting ahead is better than getting behind. During this time (March-April) you'll want to do as much as you can to set your property up to look its nicest. For the lawn, you'll want to make sure you put down a great blend of compost. This compost will help your soil become better in every way.

By adding compost to your lawn, over the coarse of a few years, you will eliminate the need for aeration and fertilization while also lowering your water bill. You can have all these benefits and till get a top notch lawn quality that rivals synthetic treatments.

Synthetic applications are like hospitals while organic and all natural are like a rainforest. One side (Synthetic) often sterilizes the environment for which its applied and creates dependance because of this. If the fertilizer treatments are stopped for example, there are not enough microbes in the soil to create what the grass/plant still needs, therefore, the specimen dies from lack of food. When compost and organic matter is added, the microbe colonies grow and produce fertilizer at the same rate as the plants can up-take. This creates balance without the need of human input. Without us, the lawns would fill up with decaying matter which would feed the soil and thus, feed the plants. We just make its look really sharp while doing this.

The compost will break down over time with moisture into usable bio material. For faster results. Do double pass core aerations and add compost after. This will help the compost work its way deeper into the soil saving up to years off the rehab.

Weeds

Now lets get to weeds. There are many cases each year for multimillion dollar class action lawsuits from harmful pesticides and herbicides claims. Anything that say "don't touch" you should leave on the shelf and not touch it. It doesn't just harm you with micro fumes, it can harm the whole balance of the local eco system. My mom always said, if you can't afford to take care of something responsibly, you should stop living outside your means. Good thing organic maintenance is cheap!

For weeds, just simply being persistent will pay off. Almost all (could be all) of our clients that get regular weeding see up to a 90% decrease in weeds year over year. Thats the goal. Get most of the root out as you can, flat heads work great, and pull straight up. Over time, the seeds left in the soil will go sterile or will sprout. Your goal is to pull them before they seed. If you stay on top of this, the amount of time you spend weeding will lower greatly each season.

How to mow

Now lets get to the basics, mowing. This is how to properly mow for best results. First, use the smaller mower you can with a strong robust body. This will help a bunch of issues down the road like scalping, lawn indentations, storage space, cut quality, mulching, bagging etc. Do yourself a favor and get a honda. We have clients with massive lawns that have had there hondas for over 10 years and still work like the day the got it. Plus, its one of the best cut quality in the industry. Egos are nice for versatility but cut quality lack due to not enough power.

When mowing always try to switch up where your tires hit the ground, even by a 10% overlap. If you continue to use the same path for your mowers, you'll create ruts which are fairly hard (expensive) to fix. We want less chores, not more.

How to string trim

String trim the boarders first, making sure the grass clippings get fling into the lawn and not hardscapes or garden beds (again, less work not more). Do this by walking behind the string trimer as if its a mower. This will allow it to lay nicely in the lawn awaiting the next step.

Use the mower to trace your boarder twice, then go back and forth over lawn, again, alternate your patterns to not cause ruts. The 2 boarder laps will give you a nice turn around spot so you don't need to push up against anything with the mower on the straight runs. If the grass is really long or thick, use a bag and bag the clippings.

Mowing frequency

Mowing more often is better than less. The goal is to prune the grass (allowing it to focus on root growth) but to cut off as little as possible (10% is the goal). The blade of grass is the plants food factory. The more you cut off at once, the more shock its going to go through. During fast growth times we recommend twice a week (if its your own lawn) or weekly if hiring a company (keep cost down). If you lawns in pretty bad shape and a very slow grower, bi-weekly should be fine.

Mowing height

Always leave your grass as long as possible without it looking wild. Long grass shades the ground, leading to water savings, and helps allow your grass to be more robust during drought or bad fungus outbreaks. We recommend 3-3.5 inches if possible. This is not really possible on a bi-weekly cut schedule as it will grow to tall and then you'll be removing to much of the grass at a time.

Organic fertilizer

If your lawn is transferring from synthetic fertilizers to organics or your lawn has plenty of great soil but you want to boost the appearance for an occasion or in general. Compost tea is a great additive. All organic and easy to make, just be sure to use a sprayer that can handle particles that make it through your cheese cloth. If you add calcium, it will reduce dandy lions and some other weed types as well.
